Bollywood 2016

With 2016 coming to an end, I decided to list down some of the best Bollywood movies of 2016 I have seen. 2016 has been a good year for Bollywood:). We got to see some really good movies. What was special about this year was that all major Bollywood stars decided to do content driven films rather than meaningless masala films that we are used to seeing. Also, all of them decided to act and perform a character for a change rather than just playing the Bollywood hero. Though we have seen and expect good performances from Aamir and Srk, the biggest surprise was Salman Khan:), who actually decided to act and gave a good performance this year:).  So here's bringing to you the list of Bollywood films that i watched and felt were worth watching this year:).

Pink:-
Pink is the best Bollywood movie of 2016 I have seen:). In this movie, when three young women are implicated in a crime, a retired lawyer steps forward to help them clear their names. Pink is a very unique and superb film for Bollywood when compared to the usual formulaic Bollywood movies filled with song and dance numbers we are used to seeing. It has a very simple storyline but successfully delivers a very stong message towards our deep-set prejudices and outright injustice that women across India face. Everything about this movie is superb, from storytelling to direction and also amazing performances by its cast. Taapsee Pannu and the girls give a very solid performance. But the performance that stands out is that of Amitabh Bachchan:). Amitabh not only delivers with his baritone voice but also expresses superbly with his eyes. This is one of his best performances in recent times and you will definitely remember his performance long after you leave the cinema halls. Overall, Pink is a superb film which may be a little uncomfortable to watch but it is also a must watch:):):).

Genre:- Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury.
Stars:- Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu.
Bore Meter:- Superb movie and good pace:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Dangal:-
The very dependable Aamir Khan returned to screen after a period of 2 years and once again managed to deliver with Dangal. Dangal is a biographical sports drama on former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two wrestler daughters' struggle towards glory at the Commonwealth Games in the face of societal oppression. Dangal movie starts brilliantly and first half of the movie is just superb:). The movie has very good direction, all the action scenes have been brilliantly choreographed. But the main reason the movie works is due to the hardwork the girls and Aamir have put for the movie and it shows.Aamir not only changes his physique for the movie, but also gets into the skin of Mahavir Singh Phogat really well. This is definitely one of the best performances of Aamir we have seen:). What doesn't work for the movie is its slightly Bollywoodised second half, where you stop feeling you are watching a movie based on reality. From the Australian competitors being shown as cartoonish villains, to the national coach character and especially the climax seemed very unrealistic. But, inspite of these issues, Dangal is still a very good film that can be enjoyed with your whole family:).

Genre:- Action, Drama, Sport.
Director:- Nitesh Tiwari.
Stars:- Aamir Khan.
Bore Meter:- Has good pace and entertainment:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Airlift:-
Airlift is a very good movie based on a real life incident. In this movie, When Iraq invades Kuwait in August, 1990, a callous Indian businessman becomes the spokesperson for more than 170,000 stranded countrymen. What mainly works for the film is its reality. The director keeps the whole film real and doesn't try to dramatize the movie too much. The movie also has a good pace and keeps you engaged with the situation in the movie throughout. Also Akshay Kumar does a very good job of underplaying his character and nowhere he comes across as a Bollywood Hero or masala actor. Overall, Airlift is a very good watch and it is more engaging as it is based on a real life incident:).

Genre:- Action, Drama, Thriller, War.
Director:- Raja Menon.
Stars:- Akshay Kumar, Nimrat Kaur.
Bore Meter:- Has decent pace. Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Aligarh:-
Aligarh is a very touching film based on true story:). This movie is a true story of Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, who was suspended from his job because of his sexual orientation. What I loved about the movie is its mature direction:). Nowhere it feels like that we are watching a movie, it feels as if we are watching a real person's life. The movie's direction is very poetic and is on par with Oscar nominated Hollywood movies. What also works for the movie is the performances by its central actors. Manoj Bajpayee does a great job as the Marathi professor and touches your heart with his performance. Also Rajkummar Rao does a very good job and brings a lot of energy to the movie. Overall, Aligarh is a good movie with really mature direction:).

Genre:- Drama.
Director:- Hansal Mehta.
Stars:- Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkummar Rao.
Bore Meter:- Has slow pace but is very well directed:).
My Rating:-

Neerja:-
2016 seems to be a year of true stories for Bollywood:). Neerja is another true story of the courageous Neerja Bhanot, who sacrificed her life while protecting the lives of 359 passengers on the Pan Am flight 73 which was hijacked by a terrorist organization in 1986. Neerja is a well made film which will make you feel for the character. The movie keeps you engaged throughout and doesn't deviate too much from its central plot. Only drawback i found was that the movie tries to manipulate your emotions a little too much especially at the end. Overall, Neerja is a well depicted film which will make you feel for the central character:).

Genre:- Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Ram Madhvani.
Stars:- Sonam Kapoor.
Bore Meter:- Has good pace and very engaging:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Sultan:-
Sultan was a surprisingly good film for me. I went in to watch a typical Salman Khan masala movie but ended up watching a good entertaining movie with decent script and strong characters. Sultan is a classic underdog tale about a wrestler's journey, looking for a comeback by defeating all odds. Sultan is the perfect blockbuster you want and expect from Bollywood. The movie is entertaining and has very good catchy songs. The movie has a decent script and stong characters. But what was most surprising about the film was Salman Khan's performance.Yes, you heard it right:). Salman Khan for the first time in his life has actually acted and played a character on screen rather than playing the same larger than life hero. He delivers a very convincing performance. Overall, if you are looking for a good masala entertainer, then Sultan is the film to watch:).

Genre:- Action, Romance, Sport.
Director:- Ali Abbas Zafar.
Stars:- Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma.
Bore Meter:- Total entertainment:). No chance of getting bored:).
My Rating:-

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story:-
This movie is based on the real life of the Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni. The movie shows his journey from being a ticket collector to trophy collector - the world-cup-winning captain of the Indian Cricket Team. MS Dhoni: The untold story is a good movie which shines in the first half when it shows the life of small town boy Dhoni. The movie though, gets a little deviated with some unnecessary romantic scenes in the second half. The movie is more like a calendar of events in Dhoni's life. We never get to know Dhoni's thoughts and how he thinks or feels. Also important events like CSK controversy have been conveniently neglected in the movie. Also the movie is a bit too long, crossing over 3 hrs. But what keeps the movie engaging is the performance of Sushant Singh Rajput as Ms Dhoni. He does a great job and gets the body language of Dhoni absolutely right. Overall, Ms Dhoni may not be a great biopic but still is a good watch:).

Genre:- Drama, Sport.
Director:- Neeraj Pandey.
Stars:- Sushant Singh Rajput, Disha Patani, Kiara Advani.
Bore Meter:- Good pace and engaging movie:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil:-
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a good romantic film:). This movie explores love - the shapes it takes, the ways it changes us and the exhilarating and often terrifying ride it takes us on. It is the journey of two characters, Alizeh and Ayan, as they navigate life, love and heartbreak. This movie doesn't have a great script or really interesting story. This is one of those movies which would have been average if you take the performances and songs away. Ae dil hai mushkil mainly works due to the superb performances by its leads. Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma have excellent chemistry in the movie and give really superb performances. Also almost all songs in the movie are superb. The movie has a good first half, but a really confused second half. A star like Aishwarya rai wasn't needed in this movie as the role she plays doesn't have any weightage in the movie. Overall, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a good watch mainly due to its terrific performances:).

Genre:- Romance.
Director:- Karan Johar.
Stars:- Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai.
Bore Meter:- Excellent performances and superb songs). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Fan:-
Fan is a good thriller drama:). It is constructed around an intriguing premise. Shah Rukh Khan plays a double role in the movie as the mega movie-star named Aryan Khanna, and also an obsessed fan of the star named Gaurav Chandna. Fan has a good entertaing first half. Second half is also decent but does get a little inconsistent with its narrative. What works for the film is the committed performance of Shah Rukh Khan. Fan is good deviation for Srk from his recent movies, where he gets to act after a long time. Shah Rukh Khan, especially while playing Gaurav, delivers a very convincing performance and reminds us of the young Srk from movies like Darr and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa:):). Overall, Fan is a good one time watch movie with good performance by Srk:).

Genre:- Action, Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Maneesh Sharma.
Stars:- Shah Rukh Khan.
Bore Meter:- Has good pace:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Dishoom:-
Dishoom is a good one time watch entertainer:). In this movie, when India's top batsman goes missing in the Middle East, two mismatched cops must team up for a 36-hour manhunt before the cricket final. The movie mainly works because of its fast pace and great humor throughout:). Varun Dhawan steals the show with his funny lines and John Abraham is good as a tough officer of the Indian special task force. Also Akshay Kumar's cameo in the film is really funny:).Overall, Dishoom is good one time watch masala entertainer:).

Genre:- Action, Adventure, Comedy.
Director:- Rohit Dhawan.
Stars:- John Abraham, Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez.
Bore Meter:- Has great pace and entertainment:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-
