Prison Movies


Prison Movies is a genre in which almost entire movie takes place in a prison. This genre category is for those films whose narrative elements primarily are constructed from prison elements. Prison Movies are great to watch for their intense drama because they show the pain that the prisoners go through. Also there are some prison movies which are really thrilling as they involve prison escape, the careful and detailed planning and then of course the actual execution of the escape keeps you on the edge of your seats:):). Here's a list of the best prison films that i have seen:).






The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The Shawshank Redemption is definitely one of the best movies ever made:). Its the first movie that comes to mind when you think of Prison movies. In this movie, Two imprisoned men bond over a number of years, finding solace and eventual redemption through acts of common decency.The movie mainly works because of its top class direction:). The movie has been beautifully directed throughout. Also the performances in this movie
are top notch especially that of Morgan Freeman:). This movie is favourite among a lot of users and hence no doubt this movie is No. 1 in Imdb:).This movie not winning any Oscars is probably one of the biggest shocks. Probably the best movie ever not to win an Oscar.Overall, The Shawshank Redemption is just mindblowing and an awesome watch:):). Do watch if you haven't seen it yet:).

The Green Mile (1999)
The Green Mile is a superb movie and a must watch if you like prison movies:). Here,The lives of guards on Death Row are affected by one of their charges: a black man accused of child murder and rape, yet who has a mysterious gift.
Everything about The Green Mile is superb. From direction to performances, the movie keeps you engaged and makes you feel for the characters.Tom Hanks is superb as Paul and also performance of Michael Clarke Duncan is worth mentioning:).It's a very well made prison drama. This is one movie you should watch if you like emotional and drama movies:).

The Great Escape (1963)
The Great Escape is a superbly executed prison break movie:). Based on a true story,here, a group of allied escape artist type prisoners of war are all put in an 'escape proof' camp. Their leader decides to try to take out several hundred all at once. The first half of the film is played for comedy as the prisoners mostly outwit their jailers to dig the escape tunnel:). The second half is high adventure as they use boats and trains and planes to get out of occupied Europe:). Extremely entertaining and well directed,this movie always keeps you at the edge of your seat:).Another great movie of the 60's, this is a superb watch:).

Papillon (1973)
Papillon is a superb prison escape film:). Here, A man befriends a fellow criminal as the two of them begin serving their sentence on a dreadful prison island, which inspires the man to plot his escape.The movie mainly works for its superb direction and also performances by both Steve Mcqueen and Dustin Hoffman are really good:).
Overall, Papillon is one movie you should definitely watch if you like prison movies:).

Das Experiment (2001)
Das Experiment is a superbly made German film.It is part prison movie and part psychological thriller. Here, for two weeks, 20 male participants are hired to play prisoners and guards in a prison. The "prisoners" have to follow seemingly mild rules, and the "guards" are told to retain order without using physical violence.The movie mainly works because of its interesting and unique plot:). The movie is based on the infamous "Stanford Prison Experiment" conducted in 1971. The movie is very real and disturbing in the right way. This is one movie which will keep you involoved and performances are also top notch. Overall Das Experiment is one prison you should definitely watch for its reality:).

  1. Was waiting for this mate. All good movies bro. Shawshank Redemption hands down the best movie on the list. Green Mile is another movie that is perfect. Really liked Tom Hanks' acting. The Great Escape was a good movie, especially because it was based on a true story, Papillon was a great watch as well.

    Yet to watch Das Experiment. Will watch it as soon as I'm free. :) Great list once again. Keep 'em coming bro.
